Chinese New Year 2026 – The Year of the Fire Horse

As we leave Yin Wood Snake behind us in a few days, we reflect on 2025 as the year of discarding, shedding and reset, a clash between old and new ideas, a year of ending and rebirth, introspection and honesty being asked of us. We were asked to shed the old, represented by snake shedding its skin and experiencing the new. This was experienced both in personal lives and globally. All round it was a year of challenge for individuals and nations, felt worldwide.
2025 was a Year to make responsible decisions and to evolve spiriturally. The general consensus reflects that 2025 was intense with many shifts and turns, upheavals and endings, a definite clearing of the old, playing out through relationship challenges, old emotions or patterns re-emerging to be worked through and let go, or a desire to simplify life or step away from the drama of the world.
This was easier for some who knew that the old skin did not fit any longer, but there was also resistance by many wanting to cling on to “the way things were,” the old way. Many people have felt fatigued, stuck, frustrated, fearful of change, emotionally spent or “done with the turmoil,” this being the 9 vibration demanding to have closure and perspective and that hopefully we would lean into our intuition and wisdom and be open to the wider horizons ahead of us. If we hadn’t quite got there by early 2026 then the Fire Horse entering would give us a forceful push with loud and rapid change.
An interesting aspect that will be visible in the skies on Feb 17th 2026, alongside the Chinese new year moon, is the annual solar eclipse. As the moon slides in front of the sun an intense “ring of fire,” around the moon will be visible for a few minutes, though only from remote Antarctica. This is followed only 24 hrs later, on the 18th of February, the holy month of Islamic Ramadan begins, also with the new crescent moon, signaling the beginning of the Islamic fasting month. This is considered a rare triple convergence in the skies for the beginning of 2026 and also welcomes the new 1 astrological year coming in with much brightness and with the vitality of the fire element of the Horse.
The Chinese zodiac animal signs have their own personalities and come in with their unique individual outcomes, some enter quietly and gently with patience, tiptoe in, and some come in loudly, vibrantly and fast, throwing us in to lessons, to see if we can swim the year of life.
The Yang Fire Horse is such that animal with a big personality. It is the 7th in line among the animal personalities in the Chinese zodiac.
In the story of the Great race dating back to the Zhan Guo period( 5th Century B.C ) the Jade Emperor decided that in order to determine the place that animals would have in the zodiac there would be a race and that the years of the calendar would be named after each animal and in order to do this they had to cross a great river. In the race the rat came first, then came the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon and the snake. All the animals had their respective reasons as to the positions they came in, in the race. The horse came in 7th because as it was galloping in behind the dragon close to the finishing line, the crafty snake coiled itself around the horses’ hoof, frightening and destabilising the horse, so it allowed the snake to come in 6th while righting itself, and so came in 7th place. Next came the goat, monkey and rooster and then the dog and lastly the Pig.
This legend has many versions and are enjoyable reading, usually told to young children, but what I find interesting about the story is how the animals’ fared in the race and got through the great river, and the strategies that they employed to get ahead in the race, which is telling about their personalities and habits, and so likewise we may be likened to the attributes and personalities of the animal year we are born into.
The 2026 Yang Fire Horse will be one of the most intense, visible, and the most talked about combinations in the Chinese calendar. The fire horse is impatient coming in fast and furious.
Its dynamic energy feels forceful, speedy, and pushy as the Snake year is closing.
In Chinese culture the Horse is known for its energetic and dynamic nature. It has vitality, speed, and perseverance. The Horse personality is hardworking, independent, and warm hearted. It’s associated with good fortune and success and forward movement, achieving quickly and smoothly. It arrives with direct presence, gusto, and states its mark.
The Yang horse is associated with the sun and described as the summer sun at its peak, in all its strength, heat, and energy, everything exposed. Like the summer sun at its peak, it is hot, direct, and intense, and all will want to take shelter. Everything will need to be felt, heard, and acted upon, which allays itself very much to how current world scenarios are playing out so speedily, and possibly to be intensified by fire horse energy.
This fire energy worldwide may translate into a year of more public expression, transformation in leadership, those who need to be seen will put themselves out on stage, and personalities that inspire change, freedom, and innovation will be drawn out, as well as those who wish to lead, speak and create. The fire energy favors these strong personalities, which can become very visible and be persuasive influencers of innovation and change.
The challenge however, of this rapid moving energy of Fire Horse, requires deliberate cooling to prevent volatility and burnout and according to Chinese astrology, this fire year demands a balance of Yin energy to stabilise the intense yang fire, to prevent it from becoming unchecked and destructive.
Therefore, conscious effort and considered thought, inner discipline and moderation can create cooler energies, more comfort rather than exhaustion and chaos.
This is the challenge for Yang Fire Horse.
Historically, the year of the Fire horse last occurred 60 years ago in 1966, and history has not described it as calm. 1966 saw a drastic change globally, quite suddenly. The Cultural Revolution began in China, with much upheaval, movement, and social chaos that overturned a whole society, seeing traditions and hierarchies being overturned.
Master Wey, Teacher of Chinece Classical Metaphysics….says that
“To understand 2026 one must understand the Horse. In Chinese metaphysics, the Horse represents movement, momentum and drive. It is Yang Fire at its peak – bold, fast, and relentless. Now add to this the Yang Fire element – the blazing sun operating at full capacity. Fire fuels the horse. The Horse amplifies fire so its Double Fire . Radiant. Explosive. Can be unstable if not balanced. So meaning, 2026 is not merely energetic it is volatile. Doors will open ever faster than before and can slam shut just as quickly. Markets can surge , then pull back even quicker. People demand change freedom and truth, their voices spreading faster than usual under ignition of Fire Horse energy. The light is intense and under this light, leaders, institutions and systems are exposed. Flaws cannot be hidden. Accountability becomes unavoidable. Even the environment mirrors this pressure – rising heat, sudden shifts, stresses that refuse to be ignored.”
Master Wey continues to say that
” this year you either ride with fire or are left behind.”
“true intelligence is not burning harder; it is knowing exactly where to place the flame”

“Wishing you abundance”
Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
