Blue mind
– the calming effects of water
The calming and healing effects of nature are well-documented. Even as little as 20 minutes outside in the fresh air and immersed in a natural landscape can reset our nervous system and help connect us back to ourselves. Related to this it now seems there are particular benefits to be gained from time near water. ‘Blue Mind’ is a term coined by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, who after conducting extensive scientific research, described the beneficial effects of being near water, in particular the ocean, on human health and well-being.
“Water is considered the elixir and source of life. It covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, makes up nearly 70% of our bodies, and constitutes over 70% of our heart and brains…the mere sight and sound of water can induce a flood of neurochemicals that promote wellness, increase blood flow to the brain and heart and induce relaxation”
Wallace J. Nichols
In Australia, where about 87% of the population are believed to live within 50k of the coast, the appeal of the ocean is well-recognised. As well as its pleasing imagery, the negative ions present in ocean air and the high mineral content of the ocean itself, have been shown to contain a range of therapeutics benefits. It is also apparent that the vastness of the ocean can induce a sense of calm and peacefulness through its predictability, while the regular, rhythmic motions and sounds of waves have an additional calming effect. Studies have shown that these benefits derive not just from the ocean but all other forms of water, including lakes, rivers, waterfalls and streams.
The calming effects of water have also been shown to lower blood pressure and improve immune function, with these benefits compounded when water is used as a basis for exercise. Water is also believed to support cognitive function and creativity, enabling us to more easily enter a state of ease and flow.
Incorporating the benefits of natural water forms into your life can include taking a walk along the beach, going for a swim in a lake or spending time sitting by a river. However, there are also ways to incorporate the calming energy of water into our daily lives when being near a natural water landscape is not possible or practical.
These include:
- Undertaking water-based exercise activities, including swimming, water sports, aqua aerobics or hydrotherapy;
- Installing a small water feature or aquarium in your home and enjoying the peaceful energy this brings;
- Taking time to relax in the bath. Practice mindfulness and letting go of the outside world at this time;
- Listening to a recording of ocean sounds or the gentle rhythm of the rain;
- Including some blue in your decor to bring the peaceful energy of this colour into your home. This is a wonderful way of having a calming backdrop for your daily activities.
Blue mind healing and the many benefits of time near the ocean or water are supported by a growing number of studies. Intuitively many of us feel and appreciate the calming effect that being near water can bring. Whether it is time by the beach, or simply allowing time for a soak in the bath, spending time in or around water brings many benefits.
